Recent News
Mobile-home owners and mobile-home renters operate under two different sets of laws. As a renter, you are covered by the state and local laws that apply to renters of housing of any sort. Now you can help yourself and other tenants. A large part of the renters in the unincorporated areas of Sonoma County are not protected by state eviction protections, due to the many loopholes in the California Tenant Protection Act. That means that landlords can easily evict people simply because they want to. But a just-cause eviction ordinance protects people from being displaced without a good cause, such as failure to pay rent, breaking the lease, or criminal activity. The eviction moratorium that we had during the pandemic kept people in their homes. A coalition of groups including Legal Aid of Sonoma County and the Sonoma Valley Housing Group presented that data to the Board of Supervisors in August, and the supervisors told county staff to prepare a just-cause ordinance. The Board also expressed interest in a rental registry (so that landlords have to follow the rules) and in emergency rental assistance.
Scheduled Actions
Tuesday, December 5, the supervisors will review just-cause. Community input is critical, both in writing and in person. These policies will reduce unfair evictions, shift the imbalance of power between landlords and tenants, and promote housing equity!
